Volunteer with us

Our museum is entirely volunteer supported. From restoring locomotives and railcars to caring for the depot, maintaining exhibits, leading tours, and hosting special events, our volunteers make the museum possible.

Volunteers at work

Behind every restored artifact and every well maintained exhibit is a group of volunteers making it happen. Take a look at our volunteers in action and see the work that goes into preserving Northern Pacific history for future generations.

Ways to get involved

Explore the many volunteer opportunities available at the museum.

Locomotive & Rolling Stock Restoration

Help us restore, maintain, and preserve our historic fleet of locomotives, railcars, and other railroad equipment. Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome. Mechanical experience is helpful, but not required. Whether you have experience working on railroad equipment or simply enjoy working with your hands and learning new skills, your help makes a difference.

Tour Guides & Docents

Help us bring the history of the Northern Pacific Railway to life for visitors of all ages. Tour guides and docents welcome visitors, lead tours, answer questions, and share the stories behind the railroad, our historic depot, and the museum’s collection.

You don’t need to be a railroad expert. We provide the information and resources you need. A friendly attitude, an interest in history, and a willingness to talk with visitors are what matter most.

Education & School Programs

Help us introduce students to the history, technology, and people behind the railroad. Education volunteers assist with school field trips, guided activities, hands-on demonstrations, and programs designed to make railroad history engaging and accessible.

Students can explore everything from how locomotives work to how railroads helped build communities across the Northwest. Volunteers help lead activities, answer questions, and encourage students to learn through observation and hands-on experience.

Events & Festivals

Help make the museum’s special events successful and enjoyable for everyone. Volunteers assist with setup and cleanup, event operations, activities, and visitor hospitality.

Help with events such as Toy Train Christmas, our Independence Day celebration, and other special programs throughout the year. Whether you prefer working behind the scenes or interacting with visitors, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

Archives & Collections

Help us care for the documents, photographs, records, and artifacts that tell the story of the Northern Pacific Railway and the communities it served. Archives volunteers help catalog and organize our growing collection, research historical materials, and preserve important information for future generations.

Whether you have experience with research and historical collections or simply have an interest in learning more, there are opportunities to help. Your work helps make the museum’s collection more accessible to visitors, researchers, and future generations.

Gift Shop

Help make each visitor’s experience a great one in our museum gift shop. Greet guests, operate the register, answer questions, and help visitors find the perfect railroad souvenir.

Gift shop volunteers also play an important role in supporting the museum. Proceeds from the gift shop help fund the preservation, restoration, and operation of the museum and its collection.
